Belbin's Theory - Team Building

June 28, 2017

Belbin’s theory of team work is a great business development strategy. Team building events work on the key platforms of this theory to create a stronger, more effective team. If you implement these key factors into your next team building activity you will be on a fast track to success.

Belbin have identified nine different behaviours (or contributions) that individuals display in the work place.  We call these the nine Belbin Team Roles for team building success.

1. The Resource Investigator

Has an inquisitive nature and finds ideas to bring back to the team.

Strengths: Outgoing, enthusiastic. Always searching for new leads.

Weaknesses: Lose interest when the initial excitement has gone.

Can be known to: They forget to chase on the odd occasion.

2. The Team worker

Brings the team together, acknowledging the work that needs to be completed and often does so on the teams behalf.

Strengths: Co-operative, perceptive and diplomatic. Great at absorbing the teams discussions and helps to reduce friction with in the team.

Weaknesses: Can be indecisive in crunch situations and tends to avoid confrontation.

Can be known to: Will hold back if they think that a decision will upset the group.

3.The Co-ordinator

Objective focused plus being great at delegating tasks to individuals.

Strengths: Mature, confident, identifies talent. Driven by goals.

Weaknesses: Can some times delegate out their own work onto other individuals

Can be known to: They can over-delegate from time to time.

4.The Plant

The problem solver with a creative flair.

Strengths: Creative, imaginative, free-thinking, generates ideas and solves difficult problems.

Weaknesses: Communication skills are lower then others

Can be known to: Forget things and loose focus.

5. The Monitor Evaluator

Great at weighing up options with a logical mind

Strengths: Strategic thinker and discerning. Takes in all option and acts accordingly

Allowable weaknesses: Sometimes lacks the drive and ability to inspire others and can be overly critical.

Can be known to: They could be slow to come to decisions.

6. The Specialist

Has a great knowledge of certain areas.

Strengths: Single-minded, self-starting and dedicated. Specialists in certain areas.

Allowable weaknesses: Tends to contribute on a narrow front and can dwell on the technicalities.

Can be known to: Supply to much information.

7.The Shaper

The driving force to a team, the motivator.

Strengths: Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. Has the drive and courage to overcome obstacles.

Allowable weaknesses: Can be prone to provocation, and may sometimes offend people's feelings.

Can be known to: Can come across as pushy or force full.

8.The Implementer

Very strategy focused, follows the game plan.

Strengths: Practical, reliable, efficient. Turns ideas into actions and organises work that needs to be done.

Allowable weaknesses: Can be a bit inflexible and slow to respond to new possibilities.

Can be known to: Find it hard to move away from an agreed idea.

9, The Completer Finisher

The quality controller, pulls all the parts together and polishes them off.

Strengths: Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors. Polishes and perfects.

Allowable weaknesses: Can be inclined to worry unduly, and reluctant to delegate.

Can be known to: To be a perfectionist sometimes over critical.

Can you identify any of these characteristics in your team members? The next time you organise and take part in a team building event, take these team characteristics along with you and see if the team building activity brings them out.
